Senior Data and Ai Engineer- Audience and Measurement

  • Work as part of greenfield project evolving our Audience Segmentation capabilities
  • Sydney office location (Surry Hills) with hybrid & flexible working environment
  • Exciting opportunity to work for one of Australia's retail media pioneers

About Cartology, Audience Capabilities, and the Data & AI COE

Cartology is the Retail Media Business within Woolworths Group, connecting brands with customers through data-led experiences. Retail media runs on data: audiences planned before a campaign, measured during it, and proven after it, across our own channels and the open web.

We are investing in new audience capabilities: how audiences are created, governed, and activated across channels. Woolworths Group data platforms underpin the work, and the engineering bar is high: audiences that reach their channels in hours, with commercial guardrails engineered into the platform rather than bolted on as manual review.

Alongside the audience work, we are evolving measurement: post-campaign measurement and reporting with and without audience overlay, for on-network and off-network advertising, drawing on platform reporting, ad logs, and data clean rooms.

You join at the start. Initially you are part of the audience capability project team; as the capability matures you embed in the core Data & Audience team as a founding member of our Audience segmentation and media measurement capabilities. You will help shape of our audience capabilities from a Data & Audience perspective and drive our data & AI platform evolution: a governed semantic layer, conversational analytics, and AI-ready data for the next phase of growth.

What you’ll do:

As Senior Data & AI Engineer, you will build the data pipelines, models, and audience datasets that power our targeting and campaign measurement capabilities. You’ll work hands-on with BigQuery, dbt, Airflow, and Python on GCP to process ad logs and segmentation data, directly informing brand planning and proving ROI. You’ll initially help establish these new capabilities within a project team before embedding into the core Data & Audience team, championing engineering standards and AI practices across the organisation.

  • Pipeline & Model Ownership: Design, build, and operate production data pipelines and models for audience planning and campaign measurement using BigQuery, dbt, Airflow, and Python.
  • AI-Ready Data Assets: Develop governed, high-quality audience and measurement datasets designed to power AI applications like planning assistants and automated campaign insights.
  • Engineering Standards & Governance: Establish and champion core software practices across the stack, including CI/CD, testing, observability, peer review, and cost optimization.
  • AI SDLC Integration: Drive the adoption of AI-assisted engineering tools while setting safety guardrails and evaluation frameworks for AI-driven data products.
  • Cross-Functional Partnership: Collaborate with product, measurement, and commercial teams to translate business questions into technical solutions, while mentoring peers through code reviews and pairing.
  • Audience Platform Spin-Up: Deliver the initial MVP pipelines and models during the first year to meet target platform sync speeds within the capability project team.
  • Campaign Measurement Delivery: Stand up comprehensive, standardized datasets for post-campaign reporting across both on-network and off-network channels.

What you’ll bring:

You thrive in zero to one environments where you can dig into business context, navigate ambiguity, and take full ownership of what you ship. You bring a solid grasp of the ad-tech ecosystem including ad logs, audience segmentation, and clean rooms along with the commercial fluency to understand how campaigns drive revenue and prove value to brands. With an unyielding focus on data quality, you combine sharp communication skills with a habit of using AI tools in your daily workflow to elevate engineering standards across the team.

  • Technical Experience: 5+ years in data engineering with deep expertise in SQL, Python, dbt, Airflow, and BigQuery (or equivalent cloud warehouses).
  • Ad-Tech Domain Knowledge: Hands-on experience with advertising data, including ad logs, audience segmentation, and campaign measurement from a retail media network, publisher, or agency.
  • Commercial Mindset: Strong business acumen with the ability to connect engineering decisions directly to client ROI and revenue outcomes.
  • AI Tooling & Enablement: Experience building AI-ready datasets or using AI-assisted engineering tools daily to improve team productivity.
  • Stakeholder Management: Clear communication skills with a track record of partnering effectively across product, measurement, and commercial teams.
  • Ad Platforms & Clean Rooms (Desirable): Exposure to channels like Meta, DV360, BVOD, LiveRamp, or data clean rooms.
  • Audience Activation (Desirable): Experience with warehouse-native activation tools (e.g., Hightouch, Census, RudderStack) or building in-house segment builders.
  • Analytics & Measurement (Desirable): Familiarity with Looker (LookML), semantic layers, incrementality testing, or closed-loop measurement methodologies.
