Position Overview:

The Project Manager is an experienced structural engineer responsible for the day-to-day management and execution of structural engineering projects under the oversight of a Project Executive. The Project Manager leads project teams and manages project scope, fee and budget, schedule, staffing, technical execution, coordination, client communication, and overall project performance from project initiation through construction.

Project Managers balance technical leadership with project management responsibilities and serve as the primary day-to-day point of contact for clients and project stakeholders. They are expected to anticipate project needs, identify potential issues, effectively direct project resources, and communicate with the Project Executive when significant technical, contractual, financial, schedule, or client-related issues arise.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage structural engineering projects from project initiation through design, documentation, permitting, and construction-phase services under the oversight of a Project Executive.
  • Take ownership of day-to-day project execution, including scope, fee, budget, schedule, staffing, deliverables, coordination, client communication, and project performance.
  • Establish project work plans, schedules, internal milestones, staffing plans, deliverables, and priorities necessary to meet contractual requirements and client expectations.
  • Monitor project financial performance, including labor expenditures, remaining fee, staffing projections, percent complete, and anticipated project needs, and take corrective action when project performance is trending outside established expectations.
  • Understand contractual scope and identify changes in scope, additional services, client requests, and other conditions that may affect project fee, schedule, or resources.
  • Communicate scope changes and potential additional services to the Project Executive and lead the development of supporting information, fee proposals, and recommendations.
  • Lead the day-to-day project team by establishing priorities, assigning work, providing direction, monitoring progress, and ensuring engineering and BIM/modeling efforts remain coordinated.
  • Plan and adjust project staffing and workload based on project requirements, schedule, team capabilities, and available resources.
  • Provide technical leadership for structural analysis and design and guide the project team in resolving complex engineering, modeling, detailing, constructability, and coordination issues.
  • Review structural calculations, analysis models, drawings, specifications, and other engineering deliverables for technical accuracy, completeness, consistency, project requirements, and compliance with Apex standards.
  • Lead structural coordination with architects, MEP/FP consultants, contractors, fabricators, and other project participants and drive resolution of multidisciplinary coordination issues.
  • Review architectural, MEP/FP, and other discipline documents to identify structural impacts, coordination requirements, conflicts, and project risks and ensure appropriate action is taken by the project team.
  • Lead external project meetings and communicate project status, structural design requirements, coordination items, decisions, action items, schedule considerations, and required information.
  • Serve as the primary day-to-day point of contact for clients, architects, contractors, fabricators, consultants, and other project stakeholders.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships through responsive communication, technical competence, accountability, dependable project execution, and an understanding of client priorities and project objectives.
  • Anticipate technical, coordination, staffing, schedule, financial, scope, and project execution risks and develop and implement appropriate strategies to address them.
  • Make timely day-to-day project decisions within the Project Manager’s authority and communicate significant technical, contractual, financial, schedule, or client-related issues to the Project Executive with appropriate recommendations.
  • Manage construction-phase engineering services, including RFIs, submittals, field conditions, design revisions, contractor questions, and other construction-related engineering activities.
  • Coordinate project QA/QC reviews and ensure required reviews are completed at established milestones and that comments are appropriately resolved before deliverables are issued.
  • Provide technical and project management guidance to Project Engineers and Associate Project Managers and support their continued technical and professional development.
  • Establish clear expectations for project team members and provide timely feedback regarding technical work, project performance, communication, and adherence to project requirements.
  • Communicate project performance, significant design decisions, client concerns, scope changes, schedule risks, financial concerns, and other material project matters to the Project Executive.
  • Support business development and client retention by contributing to project pursuits, client discussions, fee proposals, scopes of services, and project planning for new and existing clients.
  • Participate in Apex Technical Advisory Groups and contribute to the development and improvement of engineering standards, design tools, technical resources, project workflows, and lessons learned.
  • Identify opportunities to improve project management, engineering, QA/QC, and project delivery processes and contribute to implementation of those improvements.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Architectural Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Master’s degree in Structural Engineering preferred.
  • Typically seven or more years of relevant structural engineering experience with progressively increasing technical and project management responsibility.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) and/or Structural Engineer (SE) licensure required.
  • Demonstrated experience independently managing structural engineering projects and coordinating multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Advanced knowledge of structural analysis, structural systems, load paths, and the design of steel, concrete, masonry, foundations, and other applicable structural systems.
  • Advanced working knowledge of applicable building codes, ASCE 7, and structural material design standards.
  • Strong proficiency with structural analysis and design software and the ability to review and evaluate complex structural analysis models, calculations, and engineering work.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting architectural, structural, MEP/FP, and other discipline construction documents and identifying structural impacts, coordination requirements, and project risks.
  • Demonstrated understanding of project scope, contracts, fees, budgets, schedules, staffing, additional services, resource planning, and project financial performance.
  • Ability to independently develop and manage project work plans, establish priorities, assign resources, monitor progress, and adjust project execution to meet established requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead engineers and BIM/modeling team members through the design, documentation, coordination, and construction phases of structural engineering projects.
  • Ability to lead external project meetings and effectively coordinate with clients, architects, consultants, contractors, fabricators, and other project participants.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify project risks, evaluate alternatives, make informed decisions within the Project Manager’s authority, and appropriately escalate significant issues to the Project Executive.
  • Ability to identify scope changes and potential additional services and communicate their potential impact on project fee, schedule, staffing, and resources.
  • Strong understanding of client service and the ability to establish and maintain productive, professional client relationships.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical, financial, schedule, and project-related information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, competing priorities, and changing project requirements while maintaining quality, accountability, and effective communication.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership, project direction, mentorship, and constructive feedback to project team members.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the technical and professional development of project team members and the continued improvement of Apex’s engineering and project delivery practices.
