An exciting opportunity exists for a motivated and results-driven Project Manager to join our team based out of either our Calgary, Camrose, Ponoka or Red Deer offices. This full-time salaried position plays a key role in supporting the future growth and operational success of our highway maintenance contracts.
We’re looking for a self-starter with a strong background in highway maintenance, construction, and/or engineering, who brings technical skills, business acumen, and a solution-oriented mindset.
Mainroad Alberta Contracting manages four long-term highway maintenance contracts (CMAs 512, 513, 515 & 516). These contracts cover over 9,200 kilometres of provincial highways and 160+ bridges across the counties of Camrose, Flagstaff, Strathcona, Beaver, Wainwright, Vermilion River, Red Deer, Lacombe, Ponoka, and Wetaskiwin. Mainroad Chinook Contracting delivers highway maintenance services on the Calgary South East Stoney Trail (SEST) urban freeway.

The successful candidate shall have the following qualifications:
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in Engineering, Project Management, Construction Management, or Business Administration.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in highway maintenance, civil construction, infrastructure and/or engineering.
- Professional designations such as P.Eng., E.I.T., C.E.T., and/or PMP is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of highway construction and maintenance contracts, specifications, procurement processes, and contract administration.
- Demonstrated knowledge of road, bridge, paving, line painting, and highway maintenance operations.
- Experience preparing estimates, bids, tenders, and quotations for bridge, paving, line painting, traffic control, or related highway infrastructure projects.
- Experience managing projects from inception through completion, including bidding, planning, execution, monitoring, reporting and closeout.
- Strong knowledge of project controls, budgeting, job costing, change management, scheduling, and contract management.
- Experience working directly with clients, consultants, government agencies, and other stakeholders.
- Ability to develop client relationships and identify opportunities for operational and business growth.
- Experience leading teams, supervising staff, and coordinating subcontractors across large geographical areas
- Strong problem-solving, analytical, negotiation, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of reports, proposals, presentations and procedures
- Highly organized, self-motivated, and capable of managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Flexible and adaptable with a commitment to continuous improvement and innovation.
- Experience with Automated Vehicle Location Systems (AVLS), telematics platforms, SiteDocs, and emerging AI-based tools is an asset.
- Experience managing contractual KPIs, quality management, and compliance reporting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Project) and Adobe Acrobat.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a satisfactory driver’s abstract.
This role combines project management, estimating, client relations, operational leadership, and continuous improvement responsibilities, including but not limited to:
Estimating, Bidding & Contract Management
- Prepare accurate cost estimates, quotations, proposals, and tender submissions for bridge, paving, line painting, traffic control, and highway maintenance projects.
- Review tender documents, specifications, drawings, and contract requirements to assess project scope and risks.
- Obtain competitive pricing from suppliers and subcontractors and evaluate proposed solutions.
- Develop project budgets and support pricing strategies that balance competitiveness and profitability.
- Administer contracts, negotiate change orders, manage project documentation, and ensure contractual compliance.
Project Management & Client Relations
- Manage bridge, paving, line painting, highway maintenance, and other infrastructure-related projects from inception through completion.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, consultants, government representatives, subcontractors, and suppliers.
- Develop project execution plans, schedules, budgets, resource requirements, and performance objectives.
- Monitor project progress, costs, quality, and contract compliance to ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, and within budget.
- Conduct site inspections and meetings to verify work quality, address issues, and maintain positive client relationships.
- Identify, evaluate, and manage project risks while implementing appropriate mitigation strategies.
Operations & Continuous Improvement
- Lead operational improvement initiatives focused on efficiency, safety, cost control, quality, and customer service.
- Analyze operational, financial, safety, and performance data to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Collaborate with field supervisors, contract managers, and leadership teams to implement operational enhancements.
- Develop, standardize, and maintain work processes, procedures, and best practices.
- Conduct post-project reviews and measure the effectiveness and value of completed initiatives.
- Support training, coaching, and change management activities to improve organizational performance.
Technology & Innovation
- Support the implementation, optimization, and integration of operational technologies, including AVLS, telematics systems, digital documentation platforms, and AI-enabled solutions.
- Monitor and analyze operational data to improve asset utilization, productivity, compliance, and reporting.
- Research emerging technologies, tools, and industry trends and recommend practical applications to improve operations and project delivery.
- Champion technology adoption and continuous improvement throughout the organization.
