Full description

The Database Administrator III designs, implements, and supports an organization's databases, data warehouses, and data marts. This includes physical database design, performance tuning and optimization, data dictionary management, backup and disaster recovery execution, routine queries/updates, and security enforcement. Additionally, the DBA III supports critical interfaces between core business applications and back-end database systems. This position will also mentor more junior team members.

This position is located in Springfield MO and is not open to remote work.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Performance Optimization & Diagnostics: Perform database and SQL tuning based on application software tests and user feedback; monitor, diagnose, and resolve performance bottlenecks and system faults promptly to ensure optimal uptime.
  • Standardization & Automation: Drive and emphasize standardization across database environments; develop and implement automation for routine maintenance tasks, deployments, and database monitoring.
  • Governance & Change Management: Align with organizational change management processes and established protocols; contribute to the review and approval of database specifications to ensure data integrity, architecture standards, and compliance are preserved.
  • Security & Access Control: Implement and maintain required security controls (including RBAC, ACLs, and audit logging); monitor access and performance logs to proactively detect anomalies and escalate security issues.
  • Backup, Recovery & Business Continuity: Ensure databases are fully recoverable in compliance with established SLAs; regularly monitor and test backup/recovery procedures, and participate actively in Disaster Recovery (DR) exercises.
  • Database Architecture & Physical Modeling: Design the distribution of database resources and provide physical modeling and design services to tune database applications for optimum performance and scalability.
  • Requirements & Continuous Improvement: Gather technical and business requirements across cross-functional teams to translate user goals into database enhancements; research emerging database technologies and best practices to improve infrastructure reliability.
  • Documentation: Create and maintain technical runbooks, architecture diagrams, and operational documentation in alignment with organizational standards.
  • Team Leadership & Collaboration: Share technical knowledge by mentoring junior DBAs; collaborate effectively across cross-functional engineering teams, and communicate proactively with internal stakeholders to build strong operational partnerships.
  • Professional Development & Compliance: Maintain an in-depth understanding of database technologies, security regulations, and organizational codes of conduct; ensure personal and team alignment with all compliance policies.

Skills & Qualifications

Required Skills & Experience

  • Core Database Platform: Strong hands-on administration, configuration, maintenance, and performance tuning experience in PostgreSQL within enterprise on-premises and Linux-based environments.
  • Database Administration & Architecture: Proven track record managing physical database design, index optimization, query tuning, and storage allocation in mission-critical production environments.
  • Automation & Scripting: Demonstrated ability to build automation scripts and workflows to streamline routine database administration tasks and deployments.
  • High Availability & Disaster Recovery: Deep working knowledge of backup and restore strategies, replication, clustering, failover mechanisms, and SLA-driven recovery procedures.
  • Change Management & Protocol Alignment: Strong understanding of change management frameworks, system protocols, and data governance standards.
  • Data & Trend Analysis: Ability to analyze operational trends from database telemetry, monitoring systems, and reporting tools to drive informed capacity planning and infrastructure decisions.
  • Professional Attributes: Self-motivated with the ability to manage complex technical issues with minimal supervision; maintains composure under pressure and actively embraces coaching and continuous learning.

Preferred / Optional Skills

  • Multi-platform experience supporting other enterprise relational database systems, specifically MySQL, Oracle, and Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Relevant professional accreditations or cloud database certifications (e.g., AWS RDS/Aurora, GCP Cloud SQL, Azure SQL).

Education & Experience Guidelines

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience: 5 years plus of hands-on database administration experience managing enterprise production environments.
