Job Summary
Responsible for defining and governing the technical architecture of custom-developed enterprise applications and internally built SaaS products sold to external customers. Translates business and product requirements into scalable, secure, and maintainable system designs; establishes and enforces architectural standards across development teams; and provides technical leadership throughout the full software development lifecycle. Serves as the primary technical authority for all custom software initiatives, bridging engineering, product management, infrastructure, and security teams to deliver high-quality, commercially viable software products.
Essential Duties
- Defines and owns end-to-end technical architecture for all custom-developed enterprise applications and internally built SaaS products, including system design, component interactions, data flows, integration patterns, multi-tenancy models, and technology stack selection.
- Establishes and maintains architectural standards, coding patterns, and best practices across development teams; conducts architecture reviews and approves designs prior to implementation to ensure consistency and quality across all custom software.
- Translates business, operational, and product requirements into clear architectural blueprints, technical specifications, and design documentation that guide engineering teams from initial concept through production delivery.
- Architects SaaS platform capabilities including tenant isolation, subscription and licensing models, multi-region deployment, and customer-facing APIs that allow external customers to integrate with and extend the product.
- Leads evaluation and selection of frameworks, platforms, cloud services, and third-party components; produces proof-of-concept implementations to validate architectural decisions before committing to full development.
- Partners with software developers and engineering leads throughout design, development, and testing phases to ensure implementations align with architectural intent and deliver the quality expected by external customers.
- Collaborates with infrastructure and security teams to design for performance, scalability, high availability, disaster recovery, and security -- including architecture controls required for SOC II Type 2 compliance across all customer-facing SaaS products.
- Defines data architecture and governance standards for custom applications, including data residency, customer data isolation, retention policies, and integration with enterprise data systems.
- Identifies and mitigates technical debt, architectural risks, and system vulnerabilities in custom enterprise applications and SaaS products; develops remediation roadmaps and works with teams to execute them.
- Champions AI-assisted development practices, including AI coding tools, automated code review, and intelligent testing, ensuring they integrate safely within the architecture of custom-built systems.
- Defining architecture for AI-powered features: LLM API integration, RAG pipelines, and AI agent frameworks
- Collaborating with product/business stakeholders to identify AI opportunities and translate them into architectural designs accounting for accuracy, latency, cost, privacy, and responsible AI
- Provides technical mentorship to senior and mid-level developers; elevates the engineering organization's capability to build and maintain custom software at scale.
- Participates in Agile planning; contributes to sprint planning, backlog refinement, and cross-team technical alignment across custom application and SaaS product teams.
- Stays current with industry trends relevant to custom software development and SaaS delivery; recommends strategic technology investments to leadership.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, or a related field is required. Master's Degree is preferred.
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert, or equivalent cloud architecture certification is preferred. TOGAF or similar enterprise architecture certification is a plus.
- 8+ years of software development experience, with at least 3 years in a software architecture, principal engineer, or technical lead role. Demonstrated experience delivering custom-developed enterprise applications and/or internally built SaaS products to external customers is required.
- Expert-level proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript, Node.js, and modern front-end frameworks (React or equivalent), with a track record in custom-built enterprise and commercial applications.
- Deep experience designing cloud-native architectures on Azure or AWS, including microservices, serverless, containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), and CI/CD pipelines for multi-tenant SaaS delivery.
- Strong knowledge of relational and NoSQL database design, query optimization, and data modeling (SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or equivalent), including customer data isolation and multi-tenancy patterns.
- Demonstrated ability to architect custom SaaS platforms for external customers, including tenant onboarding, subscription and licensing enforcement, customer-facing API design, and usage metering.
- Experience architecting for security, compliance, and high availability, including SOC II Type 2 or similar audit frameworks across customer-facing systems.
- Experience with API design and integration patterns (REST, GraphQL, event-driven architecture, message queuing) for both internal enterprise and externally consumed SaaS APIs.
- Proficiency with DevOps tooling including GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, infrastructure-as-code (Terraform or Bicep), and automated testing frameworks.
- Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude, or similar) and the ability to evaluate their safe and effective use within an engineering organization.
- Hands-on experience architecting AI-powered products (LLM APIs, RAG, vector search, agent workflows) with understanding of prompt engineering and model trade-offs in production
- Ability to design scalable, observable AI systems with attention to token management, latency optimization, output validation, hallucination mitigation, and feedback loops
- Excellent communication skills; able to present complex architectural concepts to technical and non-technical audiences, including external customers.
- Experience with PowerShell, C#, or Python is preferred.
