About the role
The Sr. Product Manager will define the product roadmap and requirements for fleet telemetry, data ingestion, and platform architecture across renewable energy assets. They will collaborate with engineering teams to automate manual processes and ensure high-quality, scalable data delivery for grid services and VPP programs.
What they look for
Requirements
Candidates must have at least 5 years of product management experience, with a strong background in data-intensive or IoT products within the renewable energy sector. Proficiency in SQL, cloud data infrastructure, and familiarity with energy market telemetry requirements are essential for this role.
Full description
Job Summary The Sr. Product Manager, Fleet Telemetry is responsible for what the fleet telemetry and data platform organization builds and in what order, across residential, commercial and industrial, and utility-scale solar, wind, storage, and EV charging assets. This role owns the product definition for fleet telemetry ingestion, processing and the underlying data architecture, device and OEM integrations, portfolio onboarding and OEM platform management, energy production forecasting, and virtual power plant (VPP) telemetry and control requirements. The position converts operations, asset management, and O&M demand into specified, sequenced work for a data engineering and platform team with finite capacity, and productizes processes that are manual today. The requires equal comfort with residential and utility-scale renewable assets and the telemetry and data platform that supports both.
Responsibilities
Roadmapping, Requirements & Engineering Clarity• Own a single prioritized roadmap and backlog across fleet telemetry ingestion, the data lake and platform, device and OEM integrations, and VPP/grid-services software, and defend sequencing to operations, asset management, and finance.
- Write requirements clear enough to build from on the first pass, covering problem statement, system context, data definitions, acceptance criteria, and scope boundaries, maintained in Jira and Confluence as the system of record.
- Evaluate build, buy, and OEM-native options for new capability, and document the recommendation, its basis, and the operating cost of each path.
Scope: Residential, Commercial & Utility-Scale Products• Own the end-to-end IoT and telemetry strategy: instrument reliable, high-frequency data collection from heterogeneous OEM hardware (inverters, batteries, EV chargers, and other field devices) across residential and commercial/utility-scale sites.
- Collaborate with data engineering to design scalable ingestion and storage architecture — ETL/ELT pipelines and a cloud data lake or warehouse — able to scale from hundreds of thousands of devices to millions, for high-frequency time-series data.
- Productize portfolio onboarding and OEM platform management, replacing manual work across OEM monitoring portals, tenant and credential administration, and site transfers with defined process and automation.
- Define requirements for energy production forecasting, leveraging historical performance, system configuration, and near- and long-term weather and irradiance forecasts.
- Define requirements for site monitoring, gateway, and connectivity workflows with hardware and edge engineering, including commissioning, device replacement, and outage handling.
Grid Services & REC Incentive Programs• Develop telemetry and control-interface requirements for the Virtual Power Plant (VPP) program, ensuring reliable, low-latency communication to support grid-services participation.
- Define requirements for automated production and attribute feeds to REC registries and market programs (e.g., PJM, MASS-IEC), partnering with the teams that administer them.
Data Quality & Completeness• Set fleet data quality targets and SLAs for completeness, accuracy, timeliness, and latency, and work with QA and data engineering to instrument, alert on, and report against them.
- Report the measures that show whether fleet and telemetry software works: data coverage and latency, site communications health, time to onboard a portfolio, manual touches per transaction, and adoption of delivered capability.
AI• Apply AI and agentic workflows to product work such as requirement drafting, ticket triage, case analysis, and OEM capability review, and define where output must be verified before it drives a build decision.
Qualifications• 5+ years in product management, product ownership, or technical program management delivering software, including 3+ years on a data-intensive, IoT, or platform product.
- Demonstrated experience in the renewable energy or smart-grid sector (solar, wind, storage, EV charging, VPP, or DERMS).
- Working knowledge of monitoring, metering, and data acquisition in the field, including OEM hardware and monitoring platforms, data loggers and gateways, IoT communication protocols, and cellular site connectivity.
- Familiarity with leased, PPA, and securitized portfolios, including production and availability guarantees, interconnection and net metering arrangements, REC and incentive programs, and investor reporting obligations.
- Strong understanding of cloud data infrastructure and the pipeline/processing technologies used for high-frequency time-series data.
- Proficiency in SQL and working fluency with APIs and data models; able to read a schema, query production data, and hold a substantive design conversation with senior engineers.
- Ability to map complex physical-to-digital workflows and simplify them through automation.
- Fluency with AI tooling such as coding assistants, LLM-based analysis, and agentic workflows, applied to product and analytical work, with sound judgment on where output must be verified.
- Experience building or specifying real-time monitoring dashboards or predictive maintenance tooling.
- Background in energy market telemetry requirements (ISO/RTO).
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, information systems, data science, or a related technical field preferred.
