Engineering Manager - Sim to Improve
Make an impact with Laerdal!
Laerdal Medical is a global, mission-driven healthcare company that designs learning and simulation solutions to help healthcare professionals deliver safer patient care. We are committed to helping save one million more lives every year by 2030.
About Sim to Improve
Sim to Improve is a strategic Laerdal initiative: an AI-powered platform that helps healthcare organizations understand how work actually happens, uncover workflow challenges, test changes before they reach patients, and drive quality improvement at scale. The platform combines context-aware AI for scenario planning, debriefing and improvement recommendations with a shared digital workspace for simulation practitioners, quality-improvement teams and clinical leaders – built on scalable, cloud-native services. The product is at an important stage, where strong engineering foundations and rapid learning from pilot sites must develop together.
About the role
As Engineering Manager for Sim to Improve, based in Stavanger, you will lead a team of software engineers and work closely with Product, Design, AI specialists and clinical experts. You will create clarity and momentum for the team, support individual growth and strengthen engineering practices – while staying close to the code: designing and implementing features, reviewing code, shaping the architecture and solving hard problems alongside the team. Security is a first-class part of the job: in a healthcare platform with AI and patient-related data, secure engineering is something you build in from day one, not add at the end.
What you will be doing
- Lead and develop engineers through clear direction, trust, useful feedback and room to grow.
- Contribute hands-on through coding, design, code reviews, testing and delivery of production software.
- Own the engineering health of the platform: architecture, security, quality, reliability and operational readiness.
- Shape a cloud-native SaaS architecture built for scale, privacy and long-term maintainability.
- Turn feedback from pilot sites into product and engineering improvements, balancing fast learning with sustainable choices.
- Ensure AI and data components are integrated securely and responsibly, together with Laerdal's AI and Data teams.
- Build an inclusive team culture where engineers challenge ideas constructively and share ownership of outcomes.
Technology and engineering environment
Our technology landscape is evolving. Today, the platform predominantly uses C#/.NET in an Azure infrastructure, with React on the frontend. The wider engineering context includes REST APIs, distributed systems, SQL and NoSQL databases, cloud-native services, CI/CD, secure identity and access, observability, and AI-assisted product capabilities. Experience with our current stack is valuable, but strong software-engineering fundamentals, sound architectural judgment, and the ability to learn and contribute across the stack are equally important.
Who we think will thrive here You are an engineering leader who still enjoys writing code. You build credibility by contributing and helping the team make better decisions, not by taking all decisions yourself. You can create structure in an early-stage product without removing the team's autonomy or slowing learning. You are comfortable discussing product outcomes with non-technical stakeholders as you are pairing with an engineer, reviewing an API design or debugging a production issue.
Experience that will support your success
- A degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- A strong hands-on software development background, including system design, and a genuine desire to keep contributing to production code.
- Experience leading or mentoring engineers in a product-focused team, as an Engineering Manager, Tech Lead or senior engineer with team responsibility.
- Strong experience with C#/.NET in the cloud; Azure preferred. Enough frontend experience, ideally React, to guide end-to-end decisions.
- Practical experience with secure development: threat modelling, handling vulnerabilities in production, cloud security and building security into CI/CD.
- Clear communication and the judgment to balance speed, quality and long-term sustainability.
Additional experience we value
It's a plus if you have experience with:
- AI-assisted applications such as RAG, LLMs or AI-supported workflows.
- Identity and access management, multitenancy, or regulated environments.
- Observability and production operations.
- Healthcare, simulation, quality improvement or other complex domains
