The Senior Database Administrator reports to the Director of Enterprise Systems. The position is responsible for maintaining database environments and administering servers for applications used by Waubonsee Community College. The Senior Database Administrator will assume the role of cloud- and locally-hosted application and database administrator, and serve as the integration expert for non-ERP business systems.
Functions to be performed by this position with the assistance of other team members and/or professional support include assessing requirements, defining strategy, developing security, implementing and delivering operational data systems; installing and supporting business intelligence reporting tools; providing administrative and technical leadership and support for cloud- and locally-hosted applications; IT project management as assigned and integrating points for data exchange within and between external and college data systems.
Provide administrative and technical development and maintenance for all database environments.
Provide administrative and technical development and maintenance for assigned locally-hosted applications.
Provide administrative and technical development and maintenance for assigned cloud-hosted applications.
Project management as assigned including project definitions, work breakdown structures, project plans, timelines, and vendor discussions.
- Work collaboratively with various College departments to understand the project’s definitions, scopes, objectives, security needs, and requirements.
- Assume accountability for quality, timeliness, and completeness of functionality in application systems as defined by project plans.
- Manage external resources as needed for projects including time tracking, task completion, and knowledge transfer.
Provide integrations between college applications (both internal and cloud-hosted), including the college’s ERP system.
Provide ongoing support of assigned environments through access management, assisting users, and answering Technical Assistance Center (TAC) assigned calls, including managing vendor support relationships and communications.
Monitor database usage and implement improvements needed to increase operational performance and optimize disk space utilization.
Maintain database environments by performing tasks such as installing new versions of SQL Server, Oracle, and BI tools and maintaining current patch levels.
Assist with product migrations to cloud services as requested.
Keep pace with the latest technology and recommendations as appropriate. To include optimization opportunities.
Develop and ensure compliance with security procedures for monitoring and controlling access to assigned databases and applications.
Design, develop, and maintain Server security level roles as directed and operating systems updates as directed by Information Technology teams.
Assist and manage the development of disaster recovery plans.
Technical writing and Visio systems diagrams.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required in one of the following subject areas: Computer Science, Business Administration, Information Technology, or related field.
Five years’ progressively responsible experience in IT operations with a strong understanding of database/data warehouse structures, theories, principles, and practices required.
Two years of RDBMS Database experience is required.
Familiarity with data integration methods and tools, including ETL.
Prefer two years of experience working with reporting, querying tools, security, and practices.
Understanding of, and experience with, server-client computing and relational database environments.
Good understanding of the organization’s goals and objectives.
Good interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
Technical documentation skills.
Project management skills.
Ability to present ideas in user-friendly language.
Self-motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail.
Able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
