Geospatial Business Analyst I

 

Summary/Objective

The Geospatial Business Analyst serves as a liaison between EDM customers and EDM’s technical GIS teams to identify business needs and translate them into effective geospatial solutions. The Business Analyst will work directly with customers to understand and document business requirements, workflows, processes, and system needs and will collaborate with EDM GIS and technical staff to translate those needs into implementable system designs.

 

The Geospatial Business Analyst will support the full solution lifecycle, including project planning, requirements gathering, business process design, solution design, testing, implementation, user acceptance testing, deployment activities, training, and production support planning. The position will also provide subject matter expertise in electric utility operations and Vegetation Management and will support the continued development of EDM’s Vegetation Management, Line Patrol, and other product offerings.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead or support customer discovery sessions, interviews, and workshops to identify, define, and document business requirements.
  • Analyze and document customer business processes and workflows, including current-state processes when appropriate and proposed future-state processes.
  • Facilitate discussions with customers and EDM project teams to identify business challenges, process improvements, functional requirements, priorities, and solution objectives.
  • Translate business requirements and processes into clear functional design materials that can be used by EDM GIS and technical teams to design and develop system solutions.
  • Develop functional design artifacts such as business requirements, process diagrams, workflow diagrams, user stories, use cases, state transitions, acceptance criteria, and other solution-design documentation.
  • Serve as a liaison between customer business stakeholders, customer IT organizations, and EDM technical teams throughout solution design and implementation.
  • Collaborate with GIS analysts, developers, database specialists, project managers, and other technical staff to ensure proposed solutions appropriately address customer business requirements.
  • Support customer and EDM teams in planning and executing system implementations, including user acceptance testing (UAT), rollout strategies, deployment planning, production support strategies, and end-user training.
  • Develop system testing strategies and plans, including identification of testing requirements, test data needs, test cases, expected results, and acceptance criteria.
  • Execute and coordinate system testing, document test results, communicate testing status, and manage identified defects through resolution and retesting.
  • Support customer IT organizations in documenting business requirements and designs for system integrations, reporting, data exchange, and other enterprise system needs.
  • Work closely with EDM GIS and other technical team members to translate business integration and reporting requirements into appropriate technical designs.
  • Develop documentation, training materials, presentations, demonstrations, and other materials necessary to support solution adoption and implementation.
  • Provide subject matter expertise related to electric utility Vegetation Management and Line Patrol business processes, workflows, data, and technology.
  • Support EDM Vegetation Management and Line Patrol projects and initiatives by applying industry and operational knowledge to solution design and implementation.
  • Support development and continued improvement of EDM’s Vegetation Management and Line Patrol product offerings, including definition of baseline functionality, identification and prioritization of expanded functionality, product demonstrations, and other product-development activities.
  • Support customer-facing demonstrations, presentations, workshops, and other business-development or marketing activities related to EDM geospatial solutions.
  • Identify opportunities to improve customer business processes through GIS, mobile technology, automation, data integration, analytics, and related technologies.

 

Qualifications/Experience:

  • S./M.S. in Geography, GIS, Information Systems, Computer Science, Business, Forestry, Natural Resources, Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years of professional experience in GIS, business analysis, utility operations, Vegetation Management, enterprise software implementation, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience gathering, analyzing, and documenting business and functional requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and document business processes and translate business needs into system requirements and solution designs.
  • Experience developing business and functional design documentation such as process diagrams, user stories, use cases, workflows, state transitions, acceptance criteria, and test cases.
  • Experience supporting software or GIS solution implementations through requirements, design, testing, deployment, training, and production support.
  • Experience developing test plans, executing system testing and UAT, documenting results, and managing defects through resolution.
  • Strong understanding of GIS concepts, spatial data, and web and mobile GIS applications is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Esri technology, including ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Pro, Field Maps, Survey123, Experience Builder, or similar geospatial technologies is preferred.
  • Knowledge of electric utility operations and asset management is preferred.
  • Knowledge of electric utility programs, processes, and workflows strongly preferred, including Utility Vegetation Management and Line Patrol is preferred.
  • Ability supporting other EDM technical resources with integrations between GIS and other enterprise business systems is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both business and technical audiences and translate between business needs and technical concepts.
  • Excellent facilitation, interviewing, documentation, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills with the ability to understand complex business processes and develop practical solutions.
  • Ability to work directly with customers, develop strong working relationships, and facilitate discussions involving stakeholders with differing business and technical perspectives.
  • Ability to independently organize and manage requirements, documentation, testing, and other business-analysis activities across multiple projects.
