Systems and Network Administrator (exempt/salary)

Job Summary:

The Systems and Network Administrator plays a critical role in administering the university's Microsoft 365 environment, identity systems, and cloud infrastructure in AWS and Azure, along with the supporting on-premises server environment. Campus network administration is a secondary function of the role. The position is a member of the Enterprise Infrastructure team and works at the direction of the Enterprise Infrastructure Manager.

Supervisor Responsibility

This position has no direct managerial responsibility of the department.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Administer the university’s Microsoft 365 environment, including Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, and Intune.
  • Administer identity and access in Entra ID and Active Directory, including account lifecycle, authentication, and application access.
  • Administer cloud resources in AWS and Azure, including compute, storage, backup, and monitoring.
  • Assist with administration of Windows Server systems, virtualization, and backup and recovery operations.
  • Perform routine campus network administration, escalating complex routing, firewall, and design matters to the Enterprise Infrastructure Manager and the university’s managed service provider.
  • Support the university’s information security program and security tooling in coordination with the Information Security Officer.
  • Use PowerShell and the Microsoft Graph API to automate routine administrative tasks and reporting.
  • Serve as an escalation point for the Service Desk on infrastructure, identity, and Microsoft 365 issues.
  • Participate in infrastructure projects, upgrades, and migrations, coordinating with cross‑functional teams and vendors.
  • Follow change management practice, participate in scheduled maintenance windows, and maintain accurate documentation of configurations, procedures, and asset inventory.
  • Act as the primary technical backup to the Enterprise Infrastructure Manager, including operational coverage during planned and unplanned absences.
  • Mentor Support Technicians and share knowledge back to the Service Desk.
  • Adhere to the elements of the Culture of Caring.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Microsoft 365 administration, including Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint Online, and OneDrive.
  • Entra ID and Active Directory, including account lifecycle, authentication, and access control.
  • Familiarity with AWS and Azure, with the ability to reach independent proficiency within the first year in the role.
  • PowerShell scripting ability, or clear aptitude and willingness to develop it.
  • Working knowledge of Windows and Linux system administration, virtualization, and backup/recovery practices.
  • Foundational networking, including IP addressing, VLANs, DNS, DHCP, and basic switching and wireless troubleshooting.
  • General familiarity with SQL Server, MySQL, and relational databases.
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity practices, including authentication, endpoint protection, and vulnerability management.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to work an issue to root cause with limited supervision.
  • Sound judgment about when to decide and when to escalate.
  • Clear documentation habits and the ability to explain technical matters to non‑technical staff.
  • Will have to work on occasion nights/weekends.
  • Some travel required.

Education and Experience:

  • Associate’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Two or more years of progressively responsible experience in an enterprise information technology support or systems administration role, including hands‑on administration of Microsoft 365 or comparable cloud services.
  • Demonstrated record of owning a system, service, or project beyond routine ticket resolution.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to sit, stand or crouch down for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

Reporting Relationship:

Reports directly to the Enterprise Infrastructure Manager.

Work Location:

Versailles, KY campus

Eligible for remote/hybrid telecommuting agreement after 30 days of employment.
