Senior Mechanical Design Engineer / Engineering Manager

Job Description

Wilmington Machinery is a recognized leader in developing innovative blow molding and injection molding machines and processes that produce high-output packaging and structural plastic parts. We have an immediate opening for an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer / Engineering Manager.

This role will lead the mechanical and electrical engineering team in the design of large primary processing machines with large moving parts. The successful candidate will use 3D design software to generate detailed drawings and designs while driving product development from concept through production.

Responsibilities

•       Lead timely and disciplined research and development of primary plastics processing machinery comprised of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic components

•       Prepare accurate layouts, drawings, and calculations while adhering to industry, government, and company standards

•       Use project management tools to manage product development (project timelines, cost estimating, project status reporting)

•       Specify requirements to control motion of mechanical designs and lead Control Engineers in this effort

•       Lead multiple projects and provide supervision and direction of others in the preparation of layouts, detail drawings, and Bills of Material

•       Develop product specifications that meet functional and process requirements

•       Help oversee development projects and project team members

•       Critically review engineering designs for manufacturability, performance, and process reliability

•       Collaborate with process/application engineering and service teams to ensure designs support real-world production performance

Education Requirements

•       Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field

Required Experience

•       Minimum 10 years designing primary plastics processing machinery (injection molding, structural foam / low-pressure injection molding, or rotary blow molding strongly preferred)

•       Demonstrated experience with large-tonnage machinery, high-force clamp units, hydraulic/pneumatic motion systems, and process-critical components (screws, barrels, nozzles, accumulators, etc.)

•       Understanding of plastics process variables and how mechanical design choices affect part quality, cycle time, and machine reliability

Technical Qualifications

•       Broad knowledge of motion controls, actuators, metallurgy, fasteners, power transmission, fabrication, and metal machining

•       Proficient in 3D design software (SolidWorks preferred; AutoCAD Inventor a plus)

•       Experience with FEA analysis

•       Experience in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)

•       Experience in the development of multi-level Bills of Material

•       Experience working in an MRP environment

Additional Qualifications

•       Excellent written and oral communication skills; proficient in Microsoft Office

•       Strong problem-solving and technical solution abilities

•       Able to work to schedules and meet deadlines

•       Able to work effectively in a cross-functional environment

•       Able to work to industry safety standards and codes

•       Knowledge of international standards a plus

•       Strong ability to analyze and interpret data

•       Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and productively in a team environment
