Sr./Staff Backend Engineer - Java

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Sr./Staff Backend Engineer - Java based in India.

This is an opportunity to build and evolve the core backend infrastructure behind a global AI-powered SaaS platform. You will design highly scalable, reliable, and low-latency services using Java and AWS in a distributed environment. The role combines hands-on engineering with system optimization, technical problem-solving, and architectural thinking. You will collaborate closely with product, frontend, and QA teams to deliver robust solutions for enterprise customers. You will also contribute to engineering excellence through CI/CD, observability, testing, and modern development practices. At senior/staff level, you will have meaningful ownership and help guide other engineers through technical mentorship. The environment is remote-first, engineering-led, and focused on solving complex problems at the intersection of AI, finance, security, and large-scale data systems.

Accountabilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable, high-performance, low-latency backend services using Java and AWS technologies.

• Collaborate with product management, frontend, QA, and other cross-functional teams to define technical requirements and deliver integrated solutions.

• Optimize existing services for performance, reliability, scalability, maintainability, and efficient resource utilization.

• Identify system bottlenecks and proactively resolve technical issues affecting stability or performance.

• Implement and maintain software engineering best practices covering code quality, automated testing, deployment, and CI/CD.

• Monitor backend service health and performance, investigate incidents, and take preventive or corrective action when required.

• Contribute to distributed systems and microservices architecture using technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, Kafka, and ClickHouse.

• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and contribute to a strong engineering culture.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline.

• 5+ years of professional backend software development experience, with strong expertise in Java and AWS.

• Demonstrated experience building and operating high-scale, low-latency services in distributed environments.

• Strong knowledge of Java and its ecosystem, including relevant frameworks and development practices.

• Experience with microservices architecture, containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes, and distributed data systems such as Kafka and ClickHouse.

• Familiarity with RESTful API design and secure software development practices.

• Experience with CI/CD and development tooling such as Jenkins, Git, Maven, and Gradle.

• Familiarity with Agile development methodologies and collaborative software delivery.

• Strong problem-solving, analytical, and debugging abilities, with close attention to technical detail.

• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with distributed, cross-functional teams.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• For Staff-level scope, the ability to provide technical direction, influence engineering decisions, and mentor other developers is important.
