Summary of the Position

Falvey Insurance Group is one of the largest Marine Insurance MGAs in the country and was founded on the pillars of Technology and Operational Excellence. The Business Analyst, Software Development Operations role is critical to the continued maturity of the group's software development organization, with a focus on understanding, documenting, analyzing, and improving the processes used by Software Development teams.

This role is a Business Analysis position assigned to Software Development as its primary business area. The position will be expected to develop a deep understanding of how workflows across Software Development teams, where process friction exists, and where improvements can be made. From a position of shared understanding, the Analyst can document current-state processes, recommend improvements, support agreed-upon Jira and reporting changes, and help leadership make better operational decisions using reliable process data.

Position Functions

The role will have the following main responsibilities:

  • Supporting Software Development operations and process improvement through:
  • Developing a deep understanding of the processes, responsibilities, handoffs, and pain points across all teams involved in Software Development (including Requirements, Development, QA, and Project Execution)
  • Meeting regularly with Software Development leaders and team members to understand priorities, recurring issues, current workflows, and opportunities for improvement
  • Documenting current-state and future-state processes, including workflows, roles, handoffs, decision points, dependencies, and supporting systems
  • Analyzing Jira usage, workflow design, ticket quality, dashboards, and reporting to identify gaps, inconsistencies, bottlenecks, and opportunities for improvement
  • Recommending process improvements to Operations and Software Development leadership
  • Assisting with implementation of agreed-upon process improvements, including Jira configuration, reporting, documentation, communication, and rollout support
  • Building and maintaining reporting that helps leadership understand workload, throughput, aging work, blockers, rework, intake trends, and process health
  • Helping define standards for how work should be captured, tracked, reported, and handed off across Software Development teams
  • Supporting continuous improvement efforts across all Software Development teams, balancing time based on priority, impact, and organizational need
  • Communicating findings, risks, recommendations, and implementation updates to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Participating in the design of large-scale strategic initiatives that impact Software Development operations, processes, reporting, or team workflows
  • Secondary responsibilities include:
  • Using Domo, Power BI, Jira reporting, and related tools to support operational visibility and decision-making
  • Using SQL, when needed, to support data research, reporting validation, or process analysis

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Strong desire to establish relationships and understand the goals, concerns, and objectives of Software Development leaders and team members.

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to contextually switch between technical and plain language. Experience creating process flows, workflow documentation, decision trees, dashboards, status summaries, or other methods of effective visual communication.

Excellent comprehension skills to efficiently develop a connected understanding of team responsibilities, software development processes, Jira workflows, reporting needs, and operational goals. This includes learning through informal conversations with leaders and team members, completed projects, Jira analysis, reporting review, and individual process research.

Problem solving skills are necessary for this position, as numerous complex operational scenarios will be directed to the candidate on a daily basis. We are looking for an individual who enjoys getting to the bottom of process problems, separating symptoms from root causes, and helping teams implement practical improvements.

There are many routes to being successful within this role and a candidate is not expected to have all of these characteristics. There will be ample time for on the job training and learning. In essence, we are looking for a person who is interested in a dynamic role and cultivating a generalist skillset focused on process improvement, operational visibility, and software development operations.

Business-casual fast paced multi-tasking office environment.

Hours of Operations

This position supports our marketing efforts internationally. This position's work hours are Monday through Friday 9am - 5pm, in a hybrid work environment. Our hybrid environment is 3 days within our business-casual office environment. Of these 3 days in the office, Wednesday and Thursday are required, and employees may work from home the other 2 days. Our employees choose their schedule. This position requires occasional flexibility for working additional hours to accomplish project objectives.
