Full description
Lead a small team. Stay hands-on with design.
Enjoy solving engineering problems and helping other engineers succeed? Hydromotion is looking for an Engineering Manager who wants to do both.
In this hands-on role, you’ll lead a team of 2–3 engineers and designers while spending approximately half your time on design engineering. You’ll coach your team, guide technical decisions, and contribute directly to products from initial customer requirements through production.
Hydromotion designs and builds hydraulic swivels, electric swivels (slip rings), and combination units for OEM customers. You’ll work closely with Sales, Operations, Quality, and Supply Chain to develop practical solutions, support customers, and keep projects moving.
What You’ll Do
Lead and develop a small engineering team
- Set priorities and balance workloads across new designs, customer quotes, and existing product support.
- Coach and develop engineers and designers, provide performance feedback, and support hiring.
- Guide technical decisions and help the team solve problems.
- Track project schedules and engineering performance, keeping management informed of progress and resource needs.
Stay involved in design
- Design hydraulic, electric, and combination swivels using SolidWorks, including models, assemblies, and detailed drawings with GD&T.
- Perform calculations involving pressure, flow, seals, bearings, torque, and materials, using FEA as needed.
- Specify circuits, contacts, connectors, and sealing for electric and combination swivels.
- Lead design reviews and DFMEAs, develop test plans, and support product testing.
- Ensure designs meet customer requirements and applicable SAE, ISO, ASME, and other standards.
Work directly with customers and cross-functional teams
- Serve as a technical resource for OEM customers and Sales, translating requirements into workable solutions.
- Support quoting with estimates for engineering time, tooling, fixtures, and testing.
- Partner with Manufacturing on design for manufacturability, new product launches, and shop-floor troubleshooting.
- Support Quality with root cause analysis and corrective action.
- Improve existing products through cost reduction and resolution of supplier and field issues.
Keep engineering information accurate and organized
- Manage engineering changes, drawing releases, revision control, and BOM accuracy in Oracle.
- Maintain engineering and drawing standards that support the quality management system.
- Monitor quote and drawing delivery, engineering change cycle time, and other key measures.
- Demonstrate the company’s values, ethics, and safe work practices, and perform other duties as assigned.
What You Bring
Required qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Electromechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- At least 8 years of experience designing hydraulic or electromechanical components, such as swivels, slip rings, cylinders, or valves.
- At least 3 years of experience leading engineers or designers.
- Advanced SolidWorks skills, with strong knowledge of GD&T and drawing standards.
- Experience managing engineering changes and BOMs within an ERP system.
- Strong project management, communication, and customer-facing skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Experience that would be a plus
- Combination hydraulic/electric rotary products.
- Oracle ERP and SolidWorks PDM or similar systems.
- DFMEA, product testing, and APQP/PPAP.
- Marine, mobile equipment, or industrial OEM markets.
- PE licensure or Lean/Six Sigma training.
What Will Help You Succeed
You enjoy being close to the technical work and helping others grow. You take initiative, manage competing priorities, and use sound analysis to solve problems. You also consider how engineering decisions affect cost, delivery, manufacturing, and the customer.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
This role includes work in an office and a non-air-conditioned manufacturing environment. Regular computer use, standing, and walking are required, along with occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds. Safety glasses and safety shoes are required on the manufacturing floor.
Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
